From 2001 until his death, Flemming lived with his daughter Heather and her family as a Bedstefar ("grandfather" in Danish).

Flemming died on October 11, 2009. Funeral was held at Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay, on Oct. 17, and burial took place in Abercrombie Cemetery, Pictou Co., the following day. See In Memorium for more.
